Flags of Honor: A Week of Remembrance, Service and Patriotism at Minnetrista

For one week in September, Minnetrista’s Greensward was transformed into a powerful display of red, white and blue. More than a thousand American flags stood together along the White River Greenway, creating a place for our community to pause, reflect and remember.

From September 4–11, Flags of Honor brought friends, families and community members together at Minnetrista for a meaningful week honoring the service and sacrifice of veterans, current service personnel, fallen heroes and all those who proudly display their love of country.

Presented in partnership with the Exchange Club of Muncie, the annual display offered visitors an opportunity to walk among the flags, read personal dedications, and reflect on the stories represented across the Greensward.

A Sea of Flags Along the White River

Visitors approaching the Greensward were greeted by a sea of American flags stretching across the lawn beside the White River Greenway. Each flag carried its own meaning and represented someone special to the person who placed it there.

Some flags honored veterans. Others recognized current members of the military or remembered loved ones who made the ultimate sacrifice. Together, the flags created a powerful visual reminder of the many individuals and families connected to service and sacrifice.

Throughout the week, visitors spent time walking among the flags, taking photographs, sharing stories, and simply pausing to reflect. The display became a gathering place for quiet moments of remembrance as well as opportunities for families and friends to experience the tribute together.

Honoring Those Who Serve

At the heart of Flags of Honor was a simple but meaningful act: remembering and recognizing those who have served our country.

For many families, military service is deeply personal. A flag placed in honor of a loved one served as a visible reminder of their courage, commitment, and dedication. For others, the display offered an opportunity to recognize the broader community of veterans and service members whose contributions have shaped the lives of those around them.

With each flag standing alongside the next, the display showed how individual stories can come together to create a powerful community tribute.

A Ribbon With a Story

Among the flags were ribbons dedicated to loved ones by friends, families, and organizations. These ribbon sponsorships gave community members a way to publicly honor someone important to them and add their personal stories to the larger display.

Visitors could take time to read the names and dedications as they moved through the Greensward. Behind each ribbon was a person, a family and a story—making the experience deeply personal for many who attended.

Coming Together on September 11

The weeklong experience culminated on September 11 with the Flags of Honor closing ceremony, a particularly poignant gathering as the community marked the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks. The evening began at 6 p.m. with a pre-ceremony concert by America’s Hometown Band at Circle Drive. As the music filled the evening air, friends, families, and community members gathered among the flags, sharing a moment together before the closing ceremony began at 6:30 p.m.

Surrounded by more than a thousand American flags, attendees gathered for an evening of remembrance, reflection and gratitude. Each flag represented a life, a story, or a connection to service, making the display especially powerful on an anniversary that asked us to remember where we were, who we lost, and how our communities came together in the days that followed September 11. The ceremony provided an opportunity to honor those who have served, remember those who were lost, and recognize the sacrifices made by so many in the 25 years since that day.

As the sun began to set and the week came to a close, the gathering served as a quiet reminder that remembrance is not something we carry alone. Twenty-five years later, the community came together once again—standing side by side among the flags, honoring the past while holding space for the stories, courage, and service that continue to shape us. The closing ceremony was more than the end of a weeklong display; it was a shared moment to remember, to give thanks, and to remind one another that we will never forget.

Remembering Flags of Honor

Flags of Honor offered more than a striking display of American flags across Minnetrista’s Greensward. It created a space for remembrance, personal reflection and community connection.

For those who visited throughout the week, each flag and ribbon told a story. Together, they created a tribute that honored the past, recognized those who continue to serve and gave our community a place to reflect on the meaning of service and sacrifice.
