Checkers Anyone?

A lot of time goes into maintaining a home lawn. For many of us, sad to say, more time is spent taking care of our lawn than using our lawn for enjoyable activities.

Why not take a little time to look for ways to have a good time outside with family and friends so as to enjoy the hard work that goes into a beautiful lawn.

Having a cookout can be a good way to enjoy your lawn, but adding some backyard games to the mix will spice things up a bit.Look on the internet for backyard games and you will find many examples of games that people of all ages will enjoy. And for the DIY person, many games can be built quickly using easy to find materials.

Here is a list of a few popular backyard games that many enjoy. Pictures and rules and building instructions can easily be found online:

  • Ladder Toss: I have played this a few times. It’s challenging and competitive, team numbers can vary and it is fun for all.

  • Corn Hole: A popular game of bean bag tossing that you see played everywhere. A little bit of plywood, some 2X4’s and some beanbags is all you need to build your own set.

  • Croquet: An old classic that continues to be fun for all. I never knew all the rules, but still loads of fun.

Have you ever thought about bringing a classic indoor game out into the lawn?

  • Play twister on the lawn. Make a circular stencil and buy some spray paint and paint the circles on the lawn. This is sure to be a hit. Of course let the paint dry first.

  • Jenga: I have never played this outdoors but it looks fun. I am thinking of building a set for my family. Giant Jenga sets can also be purchased online.

  • Checkers anyone? The grounds crew at Minnetrista recently created a new gathering space next to the rain garden on the east lawn. We built a checker board pattern patio area and purchased some giant checkers. All are encouraged to come to our backyard and enjoy a game of checkers.

Take the time this summer to get out and enjoy your lawn with some your favorite outdoor games. Or you could come to Minnetrista and go to the front desk and sign out the giant checkers and play in our back yard. Checkers anyone?
