Plant Thrillers, Fillers, and Spillers and Other Tips for Successful Annual Plantings

As I write this, the weather forecast is calling for snow. But believe it or not I’m finalizing our summer annual order. Since Minnetrista buys the annuals whole sale, we put in the order early to make sure it is ready for late May.

So each winter, we come up with a planting plan for all our annual displays. The plan includes both containers and bed plantings in several locations. There is a lot to consider, but keeping these helpful tips in mind can be the difference between success or failure.

For Containers

Plant a thriller, spiller, and filler for a full and robust container design.

Thrillers are the show stopper, usually with a lot of color, unique flower, or even unique structure. Spillers grow over the edge and soften the container or basket, and annuals marked as trailing are a good choice for this use. Fillers should be added to contrast the thriller and to add “mass” to the pot.

Don’t place annuals that like different conditions in the same container. It is hard to keep everyone happy.

Drought tolerant and low moisture plants can be a good choice for containers.

Most containers and baskets will need to be watered daily to look their best, regardless of plant choice.Use slow release fertilizers in containers, all that watering leaches nutrients.

Only use potting soil. Pure compost and garden soil are too heavy to work well in containers and do not provide proper drainage.

No need for gravel or pot shards in the bottom for drainage. Despite this technique seeming like a good idea, it will actually slow drainage.

For most containers, holes are needed in the bottom to provide drainage. Many small holes are better than one big one.

Choose plants based on more than just the flower. Sun vs. shade, spacing, and deadheading needs are a few things to consider.
