announcing minnetrista’s 2025 exhibition lineup!

In the heart of Muncie, two artists bring their unique talents to life, showcasing the power of artistic expression in very different mediums. One is Lily Rawson, a master glass artist whose talents combine with a passion for teaching. The other is Joseph Durham, an artist inspired by the calming and transformative influence of Bob Ross.

Lily Rawson: The Glass Alchemist

Lily describes herself as an art department “oops;” as an English major at University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, she found inspiration through poetry and a mixed media class with fibers, textiles, and glass. She then pursued graduate work at Ball State University, earning her Master of Fine Art in glass sculpture.

When asked about her favorite part of the glass-making process, Lily’s answer is simple: planning. She says, “Glass is planning.” She loves the mental preparation and relishes how detailed the processes need to be once the glass is hot and ready to be manipulated. She applies these same principles to her work as the Adult and Studio Programs Manager at Minnetrista, where she has worked since 2020. Her passion for art, teaching, and planning provides the perfect skillset to foster artful expression in her students.

Joseph Durham: Bob Ross Rescue

In contrast to Lily’s experience, Joe Durham does not have a background in art or art history. He attended seminary in Cincinnati, Ohio and pursued several different careers, from lab technician to phlebotomist. In 2021, Joe’s artistic journey took a pivotal turn: during a challenging time when a close family member was struggling with addiction, Joe stumbled upon a rerun of The Joy of Painting featuring the iconic Bob Ross. The soothing cadence of Ross’s voice and his message of embracing mistakes struck a chord.

Inspired, Joe picked up a brush and began to paint, immersing himself in the world of landscapes. His first painting was on August 23, 2021, and after that he began to paint daily. The calming practice of painting became his sanctuary, allowing him to process his emotions and reconnect with his creative spirit. He likes to say, “If I hadn’t started watching The Joy of Painting, I am not sure where I would be.”

When Joe learned about the opportunity to become a Certified Ross Instructor, he enrolled in the first workshop offered at Minnetrista even though it was a two-and-a-half-hour drive from his home. As Lily learned more about Joe’s passion for painting and approachable personality, she knew he would be an excellent instructor, and in 2024, he joined Minnetrista full-time.

A Dynamic Duo

Together, Lily and Joe embody the spirit of creativity at Minnetrista. Their contrasting approaches—one grounded in the tangible beauty of glass and the other in the soothing strokes of paint—highlight the diverse ways art can inspire, heal, and connect us. Through their work, they remind us of the power of artistic expression and the importance of nurturing our passions, no matter where they lead.
