School Tours: Woodland Indian Life

Woodland Indian Life

September 5–November 11, 2011;

March 5–June 8, 2012

Grades K–5

What was life in Indiana like before the settlers arrived?  How did life change once the settlers arrived? Explore the dwellings, chores, games, and other aspects of everyday living of the Woodland Indians.

What will my students do?

K–2:

Visit our model three sister’s garden to see how it grows

Weave mats for our wiikiiamii with cattails and sinew

Make a clay pinch-pot to take home

Explore the process of making a canoe

Play games that Native American children would have played so long ago

3–5:

Visit our model three sister’s garden and use a mortar and pestle for preparing corn

Weave mats for our wiikiiamii with cattails and sinew

Make a clay pinch-pot to take home

Explore the process of making a canoe

Play a game that illustrates trading as commerce

What will my students learn?

The natural resources Native Americans had in Indiana in the 1800s affected their culture, including their clothing, shelter and food

Influence from settlers gave the Indians access to materials and methods not used previously

The same resources could be used for many different things

A model can be used to illustrate how the “real thing” works

Life today is much different than for those who lived in the woodlands, but the basic needs have remained the same

Indians are not extinct; there were cultural shifts that changed who lived here and how they lived, but there are still Indians in Indiana
