School Tours: How They Lived

How They Lived, How we live

September–November; April–June
Grades K–2 (90 minutes each)

Pairs well with:

  • Tours—Habitat Hunters,
  • Shows—Habit-tat-tat

What was Indiana like before settlers arrived? How did life change once they moved here? Students will explore how Native Americans and settlers shaped the communities we live in today and how the environment shaped the communities who chose this area as their home, including ours.

What will my students do?

  • Examine a changing community through use of dioramas
  • Observe artifacts to see which items are familiar and still used and which items have been replaced
  • Explore how food cultivation practices have changed over time
  • Make a pinch pot to show how Native Americans would have cooked their food, comparing it to a metal pot used by settlers, and modern cooking methods

What will my students learn?

  • How communities change over time as resources and population distribution change
  • The knowledge that over time things have changed
  • The natural resources Native Americans had in Indiana in the 1800s affected their way of life
  • Influence from settlers gave the Native Americans access to materials and methods not used previously
  • There were cultural shifts that changed who lived in Indiana and how people lived here
