Field Day: Raise The Roof

Raise The Roof

Grades K–5

Explore architecture from the ground up, and then back down! Through the use of this interactive exhibit your students can explore constructions from many different angles. They’ll discover how nature, time, locations, technologies and resource accessibility all affect the buildings we use every day.

 

What will my students do?

Explore the exhibit Raise the Roof to understand the fundamentals of architecture

Build model constructions out of various materials they encounter every day

Examine compare historical mansions and modern buildings

Compare the workload with and without assistance from simple machines

Play games to explore the affects of weather on various buildings

Create charts to illustrate their findings as they assess architectural styles

Use models to better understand different types of structures

 

What will my students learn?

Knowledge of many different subjects is needed to create a solid building, including communication, geometry and environmental science

Creating a safe, reliable dwelling or office space requires specialized tools and machines

Building materials, methods and designs have changed significantly through history

Models can help us understand real structures

Architectural definitions- including cornerstone, structural integrity, air flow and demolition
