Camp Teacher—Contract Position

Job Description

Purpose:  Develop, prepare for, and teach curriculum for each Minnetrista day camp class(es) hired for.

Qualifications:

Candidate must be self-motivated, organized and able to effectively communicate with campers, parents, staff and volunteers.  Two or more year’s education experience working with children is a plus. Candidate is expected to be professional at all times. Flexible working style is a must.   Teachers must support and practice imaginative, engaging and learner-centered education and be able to work individually and collaboratively with colleagues. Candidate must be able to walk at least 2 miles per day and spend lengths of time outdoors.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop content and activities for specified camp classes.
  • Schedule and attend 1 individual meeting w/ camp director by April 13 to discuss your classes.
  • Using the provided lesson plan template, create a lesson plan of daily activities for all classes by April 30.
  • Provide lesson plan revisions by June 8 (director will provide feedback by May 18)
  • Provide camp director with supply lists by the following dates:

Week 1 teachers- June 15               Week 2 teachers- June 22

Week 3 teachers- June 29               Week 4 teachers- July 6

  • Attend 1 orientation session on June 20 from 3-6 p.m.
  • Facilitate week-long, half-day thematic camp classes.
  • Maintain classroom control.
  • Manage classroom resources.
  • Ensure campers’ safety during class activities.
  • Effectively use the volunteer Jr. Counselors as leaders and role models in your class.
  • Facilitate snack breaks.
  • Assist with opening activities each day.
  • Assist with camper pick up and/or drop off times.
  • Attend 1 post camp meeting on July 26 from 3:30-5:30 p.m.
  • Fill out and return a Camp Minnetrista Evaluation, as well as a self-evaluation.
  • Teachers will be paid a one-time sum of $300 at the end of their week of camp.

 

Working Conditions

Teachers will work in all public areas of Minnetrista’s campus; this includes indoor and outdoor spaces.  Teachers are expected to facilitate each week-long class they are responsible for, including those days with unexpected weather. Alternative lesson plans are suggested.  Camp Minnetrista shirts will be provided and should be worn daily.  Teacher will be evaluated by the education manager one time per class.

 Week 3 (July 9-13)

Morning (arrive by 7:45 a.m.–leave by 12:15 p.m.)

Grades 46

Mysterious Minnetrista- It’s the caper of the missing Ball Jar! Our investigations will require us to probe into the history of the Ball family and homes. Using our expert forensic skills, newly learned interrogation techniques and piecing together the clues, we’ll figure out “whodunit.”

 Week 3 (July 9-13)

Afternoon (arrive by 12:45–leave by 5:15 p.m.)

Grades 1–3

Garden Gifts- Use items from the garden to create gifts to be enjoyed all year round. We’ll dry flowers to make potpourri and arrange fresh flowers into beautiful bouquets. We’ll also learn about other kinds of portable gardens and plant and take care of indoor planters.

 Week 4 (July 16-20)

Morning (arrive by 7:45 a.m.–leave by 12:15 p.m.)

Grades 1–3

Enchanted Garden Creatures- We’ll read and investigate myths about faeries, sprites, garden gnomes, pukwudgies and more. We’ll make and decorate gnomes for our gardens, create models of faeries and sprites and make up our own magical creatures stories. We’ll also get a visit from one of Faerie Friend characters from Minnetrista’s Faeries, Sprites and Lights Event!

Week 4 (July 16-20)

Afternoon (arrive by 12:45–leave by 5:15 p.m.)

Grades 1–3

Supermarket Scientists- Perform experiments that will amaze your friends and family with items you can find at the grocery store, pantry and refrigerator. Did you know you can separate the colors in Kool-aid mix with just water and coffee filters or grow gems out of sugar? Find out how your kitchen can become a chemistry lab!
