F.C. Ball Home, painting by Alan Patrick The Ball Family Homes
Paintings by Alan Patrick

It was easy for artist Alan Patrick to determine the colors of the four remaining Ball family homes but not so easy to duplicate the colors of the Frank C. Ball home. That house burned in 1967 and Minnetrista now stands on the site. Alan remembered the roof as being red, but photos provided to him by F.C.'s grandson Frank Bracken showed that it was green. One of those photos also featured an automobile that Alan decided to include in the painting.

In 1996, Alan was commissioned to paint the homes of the five Ball brothers. He was given free reign and first considered creating a collage of the houses but, in the end, decided to paint the houses separately. After photographing the standing houses in early spring, Alan worked on the paintings in his studio. You'll notice that he "faked" the season in the painting of the Lucius Ball home.

When the paintings were completed, they were displayed at Minnetrista before they were hung in the boardroom at Alltrista (now Jarden Home Brands). In January 2008, these paintings were donated to the Minnetrista Heritage Collection by Jarden Home Brands. When Alan learned that Jarden had given the paintings to Minnetrista, he donated his preliminary drawings. Together, the paintings and the drawings tell the story of the houses and the process of capturing them on canvas.
